We all know that fitness and alcohol do not go well together...But what exactly are the negative implications of drinking for your health and shape?
High-calorie intake
Alcohol is the second most caloric substance there is (after fat). At the same time it contains no nutrients, so all you get are "empty calories"
Hunger and appetite -> even more calories!
Have you noticed that when drinking alcohol your appetite increases dramatically? And what's worse you always crave salty and fatty snacks, such as fries, pizza, burger, chips, cheese etc. The two hormons (ghrelin and kortizol), whose production is increased by alcohol are to blame for this....
ghrelin
triggers the feeling of hunger
kortizol
creates the desire for fatty, high-carb food
transfers young fat cells to mature ones (which are dificult to get rid of...)
is responsible for the transition of fat from hips and butt (="healthier areas") to belly, where the fat is changed to dangerous visceral fat
Dehydratation
Alcohol dehydrates your body which is bad for the muscle growth and functionality
Increased muscle protein breakdown, decreased muscle protein synthesis
In other words, alcohol is very bad for your muscle growth, since it stimulates the very opposite process (breakdown and loss of muscle mass)
Increased production of estrogen
Have you noticed that men who drink a lot tend to have boobs and big belly? This is because their body produces more estrogen than it should....Careful guys!
Obviously, if you are trying to achieve some results in fitness, you should stay away from the alcohol. On the other hand, there are also some positive impacts of one small glass of wine or one small beer for your health...but about it next time!
